Blackburn scored their first goals from open play this season as they overcame Millwall 2-0 from the Sky Bet Championship.
The hosts have found goals hard to find so much in Ewood Park but they put the concerns to rest with an encouraging performance that saw them take the lead via a Derrick Williams piledriver in the very first half – his second of the year.
Tony Mowbray’s team needed to weather a few intervals of dominance from their visitors that are competitive, however, the opportunities dropped to Blackburn, who were denied a margin of victory by the Bartosz Bialkowski.
But Bradley Dack’s on ensured three points for Rovers who leapfrog their competitors in the league after stretching their unbeaten run from the Lions to eight.
Millwall’s away form is an issue, extending without a victory – the last of which came in March.
Mowbray given John Buckley his first league start for Rovers, while Millwall’s Neil Harris failed for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson along with Jayson Molumby.
Both sides traded early long-range shots without a success however the hosts made the breakthrough in magnificent fashion at the 18th minute through an unlikely source because the ball was played into the edge of the area from Greg Cunningham and Williams charged onto it until hammering an unstoppable strike into the right handed corner.
The Lions responded to this setback, together using Mahlon Romeo forcing Christian Walton to a smart rescue, and Connor Mahoney’s inviting corner frees everybody.
However, the Blackburn captain hauled his campaign disappointingly wide although Rovers had the chance to extend their lead when footwork by Dack enabled him to slip the ball to Elliott Bennett.
When he left two magnificent saves to keep his side in the 23, millwall were indebted to Bialkowski early in the second half.
Firsthe steered the 25-yard driveway of Stewart Downing off, before producing a much better save to thwart Adam Armstrong, after the striker had bundled into a one-on-one, repelling his close-range campaign.
Ryan Leonard needed the hosts once the ball was played to him 20 yards but he could not quite keep his campaign 29, worried 18 minutes .
And then Rovers made sure of the points at the 74th minute, ending a period of concerted pressure with a fine low ball throughout the face of the goal from Darragh Lenihan and Dack was on hand to tap into his third of the season in the back post.
As Rovers broke in pace, bialkowski made another save 12 minutes from time along with Joe Rothwell shot appeared destined for the bottom corner, just for the goalkeeper’s outstretched arm.
